3rd Annual Sandpiper Open Golf Tournament
The third annual Sandpiper Golf Tournament was held June 9, 2006 at the Ocean Resorts Golf Club in Berlin, Maryland. Our thanks to Jeff Fields for his interest and guidance in helping out with the production of this tournament at Ocean Resorts Golf Club and the genereous $500.00 check! The facilities and professional staff at Ocean Resorts Golf Club look ever better this year. Ocean Resorts Golf Club has independently raised over $2,000.00 for the Epilepsy Association of the Eastern Shore with promotion of the agency event at their business over the last three years. The staff, board, and clients of the Epilepsy Association of the Eastern Shore are very grateful for this generosity.
We were very fortunate to have great weather for the 2006 tournament. Team turnout was up this year with 59 players. The strong participation of the Fruitland Redmen Lodge team (s) beefed up the success of this event. Thank you. The tournament was based on 4-person teams, best ball scramble. In keeping with the previous year several special event Holes were designated on the course. There was a “longest drive” and “closest to the pin” Hole(s). The prized hole-in-one 2006 Ford Focus prize was made possible by Sherwood on the Shore. With fourteen teams participating, and over 30 local businesses -- this year's event was one of our most successful!
RESULTS
Hole #17 was the “Longest Drive” and Hole #12 “Closest to the Pin”
Preston Dryden won the “Longest Drive” shot at the tournament and Harry Smith won the “Closest to the Pin” competitions. The generosity of area businesses provided extraordinary gift items that included prime green fees from area golf courses and lunch/dinner gift certificates to area restuarants like the Cottage Cafe, Cultured Pearl, Nicks Original House of Ribs, Pacers Restaurant, Phillips, and Zias Pasteria. These door prizes were given to winning teams after the tournament. The awards were handed out at the Ocean Resorts Golf Club's club house where participants were able to eat an all inclusive barbecue meal and beverages.
Although the day was kicked off with a $5,000 Putt For Cash contest. No one sunk the putt...but several players came close. Unfortunately, no one has ever won the hole-in-one coveted prize - a Sherwood on the Shore Ford Focus. So, Tiger Woods or Phil Michelson do not need to worry...no records are being broken here at the Sandpiper Open Golf Tournament. Still, we had a great time, raised funds, and helped to further secure the mission of the Epilepsy Association of the Eastern Shore - right here on the Maryland Eastern Shore.
Dr. Jose R. Balea - Director of Public Affairs - Epilepsy Association of the Eastern Shore
